Topic
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Synopsis
In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, therapists help people review their emotions, beliefs, early-life experiences, so that they are able to acquire insight into their maladaptive patterns and defense mechanisms that have formed over time, and which may be causing present-day problems in their lives. Transference, which is the transferring of one’s feelings for a parent, for example, onto the counsellor, can also help illuminate the early relationship experiences of a client and how they affect his / her present day relationships. This intimate look at interpersonal relationships can help a client to see his or her part in relationship patterns and empower him or her to transform that dynamic.
Learner’s Outcome
Upon completion, learners should be able to:
– Understand the fundamental principles of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
– Know how Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is used in Counselling Case Management
– Use the framework of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy in Counselling Practice

Narrative Therapy
Synopsis
Throughout a person’s life, personal experiences are transformed into personal stories that are given meaning and help shape a person’s identity. In articulating and framing those stories in the context of counselling, Narrative Therapy separates the person from the problem and encourages people to rely on their own skill sets to resolve the problems that exist in their everyday lives. In this regard, Narrative therapy places the client in the position of the narrator of his / her own life, and utilizes the power of the client’s personal stories to discover his / her life purpose.
Learner’s Outcome

– understand the concept and process of Narrative Therapy

Topic
Reality Therapy
Synopsis
Reality Therapy is founded on the principles of Choice Theory. It proposes that all human issues occur when one or more of five basic psychological needs are not met, and that an individual can only control his or her own behaviour through conscious decision-making. The founder of Reality Therapy, William Glasser, believed that when someone makes choices to change his or her own behavior, rather than attempting to change someone else’s, that person will be more successful at attaining his or her desires. The Reality Therapy approach to counselling and problem-solving focuses on the present situation and how the client can create a better future, instead of concentrating at length on the past. Typically, clients seek to discover what they really want and whether their current behaviour is actually bringing them nearer to, or further away from, that goal.
Learner’s Outcome
Upon completion, learners should be able to:
– understand the concept and process of Reality Therapy
– know the strengths and limitations of Reality Therapy in Counselling Case Management
– apply Reality Therapy to Counselling Case Management

Topic
Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapy
Synopsis
Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapy was developed by Dr Eric Berne in the 1950’s, and is based on three philosophical tenets: First, that people are fundamentally OK. Second, that everyone (apart from the severely brain-damaged) has the capacity to think. And third, that people decide on their own destiny and those decisions can be changed. A core theory in TA is the Ego State model, which comprises the Parent, Adult, and Child parts of a person’s personality structure. Other clinical applications may also involve Script Analysis, Strokes, Structural Analysis, Game Analysis, and Life Positions. Using these approaches, TA seeks to help individuals gain greater self-awareness of their own internal processes, and how these processes influence their sense of self, and their interaction with other people in their life.
Learner’s Outcome
Upon completion, learners should be able to:
– appreciate the basic framework of Transactional Analysis (TA)
– apply the key TA concepts effectively in case management
– conceptualise and support common issues using TA strategies

Solution – Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
Synopsis
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) focuses on a client’s future possibilities and the solutions that can help him or her achieve them, rather than the challenges and problems that brought him or her to seek counselling in the first place. This emphasis, and the relatively short number of therapy sessions envisaged for typical cases, sets SFBT apart from many other major psychotherapeutic approaches. Other key features of SFBT include clear, concise, and realistic goal-setting, and the structured and systematic conversational approach adopted by the SFBT therapist.
Learner’s Outcome
Upon completion, learners should be able to: – appreciate the basic framework of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) – apply the key SFBT techniques effectively in case management – conceptualise and support common counselling issues using structured SFBT strategies – understand strengths and limitations of SFBT

In this regard, the PCT therapist is encouraged to assume the three “core conditions” of empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard for their client.
